Are business cards dead in a digital world?

Hi-tech gizmos and gadgets might be all around us, but the humble printed business card still packs a punch. However, there is no excuse for not getting innovative and creative with their design and use.

At networking events, exhibitions or even when meeting new clients, things usually begin with questions like: “What do you do?” or “Where do you live?” With the niceties out of the way, things generally become a bit more structured before business cards are exchanged at the end.

In our ever-changing world, day-to-day activities such as meetings with the team or clients and conferences have become virtual. New connections are made online. For example, LinkedIn has 433 million registered users, with more than 40% of those checking the platform daily.

Using LinkedIn and clicking the connect button doesn’t exactly take much courage and it’s quicker and cheaper than printing.

But while that’s all well and good, it’s the business cards that deliver a personal touch.

First impressions count, so when you hand over a well-designed card, it catches the receiver’s attention straight away.

Not only does your card offer your name and contact details, but it is a representation of you and your company. It should reflect your personality and give the receiver a valid reason for wanting to keep in contact.

How can you make your business card stand out?

The look and feel of a business card count for a lot, so put in the effort with the design, colour, texture and quality. Doing so ensures your card stands out from the rest.

Also, check that your card is easy to read, that the font is simple, and the colours contrast enough.

Nowadays people may think they can ditch business cards because everyone has a phone, right? But that’s not always the case. Just because you may be tech-savvy, it doesn’t mean that everyone else in the room is.

Business cards done correctly are a visual reminder of what you do and what you stand for. They advertise your brand message as well as having a functional purpose.

For example, for Clone Media, we are a creative printing company. So, our business cards would need to express that by choosing the correct paper type, colours to match our brand and also font type.

Think about this before you decide to ditch the next print batch of business cards. Although the world is turning digital, printed business cards will still leave their mark.
